Understanding Menstruation
Menstruation is a body’s way of preparing itself for a proper pregnancy. It is the medical term for getting your periods. When a girl’s body releases an egg, her body prepares the uterus to cushion the egg and then sheds the thickened lining and unfertilized egg. This is all part of a girl’s cycle.

How does the menstrual cycle work?
The working of this cycle is quite simple. Once a month, an egg leaves the ovaries and goes through the fallopian tubes to the uterus. At this time, the lining of the uterus thickens with extra blood and tissue to provide a cushion for the potentially fertilized egg. If, at this time, the egg gets fertilized with sperm then the fertilized egg will attach itself to the uterus, where it will slowly develop into a baby.

However, if the egg does not come in contact with sperm, the lining of the uterus will start to break down so that it may be shed. Along with the lining, the unfertilized egg is also shed. Hence, your “period” is this time of bleeding, which happens when your body is getting rid of this extra blood and tissue.

Length of a cycle
A cycle usually lasts about 28 days, but can be as short as 23 days and even go up to 36 days. The length differs among women. The first day of your period is Day 1 of your cycle. You count your cycle from the first day of bleeding in one month to the first day of bleeding in the next month thus accordingly you would say, you have a 29 day cycle or a 27 day cycle and so on.

When a girl begins to menstruate, it takes time for her body to fall into a fixed pattern. Her cycle may not be on schedule for the first few years. Also, in the years leading up to menopause, a woman’s cycle may be unpredictable. During this time, the menstruation period is shorter and the time between periods is longer.

Important Tips

  • Having unprotected sex when menstruating can get you pregnant.
  • If you have sex without using birth control and don’t get your period for a month or longer, you could be pregnant.
